Ibadan date nights don't have to mean the same two restaurants. The city has quietly picked up a good mix of places where you can actually talk, eat well and, at a couple of them, do something together instead of just staring at a menu.

1. Black Ox Bistro

2. DeSignature Pizza Making

3. 961 Café & Restaurants

Hours, prices and directionsA Lebanese café opposite Jericho Mall that suits a slow, chatty evening: cardamom coffee, wood-fired manakish, mezze and grills. The 961 Burger (₦18,000) is the house favourite if one of you wants something hearty.
Open until 11pm every day, and you can reserve a table.
4. The Silver Spoon

Hours, prices and directionsThe restaurant inside DeSignature Tower, so it pairs well with the pizza experience or the hotel's sip and paint. The menu runs from pepper soups and seafood okro to jambalaya (₦20,000) and sharing platters, with shisha if that's your thing.

5. El Paraiso Café
Akala Express, Ibadan · ₦20,000 to ₦25,000
Hours, prices and directionsPoolside seating and nicely plated food at Sunrise Mall on Akala Express. It looks the part, which is half of what a date needs.
Service can run slow on busy nights, so don't arrive starving.
6. The Rectangles Resto-Lounge

Hours, prices and directionsOne of Bodija's newest spots, in Prime Mall on Awolowo Avenue. It's a restaurant and lounge doing seafood, continental and Nigerian dishes, with a bar for cocktails afterwards.

7. Supreme Restaurant
New GRA, Ibadan · From ₦10,000
Hours, prices and directionsThe quieter option, tucked inside Supreme Apartments in New GRA off MKO Abiola Way. Nigerian and continental food, open 10am to 10pm every day, and they take bookings for anniversaries and private dinners.
8. Viva Cinemas

Hours, prices and directionsThe classic. Catch a film at Viva inside The Palms on Ring Road, then eat somewhere on this list. Easy, low pressure, and it gives you something to talk about over dinner.
